The HUUSD School Board met in person (with an option for remote participation) last Wednesday, September 14, 2022.

The meeting began with public comment from Brian Dalla Mura thanking Dr. Mike for putting a pause on prone restraints. He provided some additional information concerning numbers and made comments regarding both restraint and seclusion in the district. He concluded by encouraging the Board to work with a consultant on this issue.

The board chair received a letter of resignation from Iana Gabriela Fraser resigning her Waterbury seat due to moving out of Waterbury.

Ray Daigle, Director of Operations & Maintenance, provided information regarding HVAC improvements and upcoming PCB testing. Ray said that all classrooms in the district have stand-alone HEPA filters for COVID mitigation. PCB testing is on hold as we wait for testing guidelines from the state.

The Board discussed support staff contracts, which will expire June 30, 2023. They discussed whether they would like to negotiate the contracts themselves or hire the district’s attorney to help. There was also some discussion regarding how to coordinate approval of athletic trips that aren’t planned with a two-month advance notice; Dr. Mike will provide a potential procedure change to the Board for review.

 In action items, the Board:

  • Approved a motion to adopt Policy E19: Policy on Nondiscriminatory Mascots and School Branding.
  • Approved a motion to form a sub-committee to review the Restraint and Seclusion Policy for possible updating; it was amended to include other related policies as needed.
  • Approved a motion for the Cross Country team to attend an overnight trip in Maine
  • Approved a motion to amend the minutes of the August 31, 2022 meeting to reflect that Kelley attended the Executive Session; minutes were approved as amended.

As always, the Board welcomes feedback from our community. One of the easiest ways to share your thoughts is to send an email to [email protected], which will go to every Board member. There is also time at every Board meeting for public comment. Alternately, reach out to one of your neighbors who is on the school Board and share your thoughts in a personal email or phone call (see a list of Board members and contact information at).

The Board’s next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 28th at 7PM (please note the change in time). Community members may attend in person in the Harwood library or remotely via zoom (), or watch it broadcast live on Youtube (). Agendas and other related documents are available at huusd.org.
