The HUUSD School Board met in person (with an option for remote participation) last Wednesday, August 31, 2022.
The meeting began with an executive session.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Leichliter presented a Board report, which included a COVID update. Director of Operations & Finance Lisa Estler presented a report, with some focus on energy costs and a list of capital improvement updates.
The Board discussed aspects of Board expectations and protocol. There was some discussion regarding how to approach conversations with constituents, particularly on public forums.
Moretown and BPS building principals and the Director of Special Education and Student Support Services presented on the district’s Restraint and Seclusion Policy. The presentation explained:
- Background and specifics of Rule 4500: Use of Restraint and Seclusion in Schools.
- The training provided to HUUSD staff to prevent the need and use of restraint and seclusion.
- The schools’ response to keeping all students and staff safe.
In action items:
- A motion to warn adoption of Policy E19: Policy on Nondiscriminatory Mascots and School Branding was passed without objection.
- A motion to authorize the Director of Operations & Finance to pre-buy oil and propane at the lowest available price for that day passed unanimously.
The Board is hosting the final Meet and Greet for the new Superintendent Dr. Mike and his wife Mary Edith on Saturday, September 10th from 9AM to 1PM at the Waitsfield Farmers Market. This event is a great opportunity for community members, parents, and students to get to know Dr. Mike.

Alternately, reach out to one of your neighbors who is on the school Board and share your thoughts in a personal email or phone call (see a list of Board members and contact information at).
